Speaking during an interview from 31:30 on Mic On Podcast, Nigerian activist and political commentator Omoyele Sowore shared a personal story from his early days as a student at the University of Lagos.

Sowore recounted his experience of arriving at the university with limited resources, describing how he brought a bag of garri with him as a means of sustenance.

According to him, the moment reflected the economic differences among students at the time, as well as the social attitudes that sometimes accompanied those differences.

“I arrived at the University of Lagos with a bag of garri on my head. The rich students were making fun of us, saying, ‘Why would you bring garri to our university? You are disgracing our university.’ The rich guys came to our room and said, ‘Please, can you give me a little bit? I want to taste the garri.’ So that was how it was.”

He explained that some of his peers initially reacted with amusement, questioning why he would bring such food items to the university.

Sowore noted that the experience highlighted the realities of student life for many Nigerians, where individuals from different economic backgrounds come together in shared environments. Read_More…
