Political activist and Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) senatorial aspirant for the Federal Capital Territory, Aisha Yusuf, has explained why she delayed her move from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the NDC after the defection of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.

Speaking during an interview FROM 14:24 on Channels Television on Sunday May 24, 2026, Yusuf said her decision to remain temporarily in the ADC after Obi’s move to the NDC was guided by her commitment to complete responsibilities she had already undertaken within the party.

According to her, many people speculated about her delay in joining the NDC after Obi’s defection, but she insisted the decision was rooted in personal integrity and loyalty to assignments she had accepted in the ADC.

“When Mr. Peter my principal, Mr. Peter Obi had moved to the NDC, a lot of people did not see me moving immediately, and there were a lot of speculations,” she said during the interview.

Yusuf explained that although she had already decided to leave the ADC, she chose to stay behind temporarily to conclude party-related work before making her exit official.

“For me, I am a person who, when I give my word, I keep my word no matter what the cost, personal or otherwise. I stayed back in the African Democratic Congress to finish up the work I was doing, the responsibility I had. I had to tie everything up, tidy it, and finish it, because for me, it touched on my integrity,” she stated.

The activist, who is seeking the NDC senatorial ticket for the FCT ahead of the 2027 elections, described her experience in the ADC as valuable, despite eventually leaving the party.

She said she remained proud of her contributions while in the ADC, adding that her transition into partisan politics had been shaped significantly by the experience she gained in the opposition party.
