Gideon Para-Mallam has called for stronger support for girl-child education in Nigeria, saying the continued captivity of Leah Sharibu highlights the risks faced by young girls seeking education in vulnerable communities.
Speaking during an interview from 5:25 on Channels Television, Para-Mallam said Leah Sharibu who was among the 110 schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram terrorists on February 19, 2018 from the Government Girls Science and Technical College in Dapchi, Yobe State became a target because of her determination to pursue education despite the security challenges facing parts of the country.
“Leah Sharibu was also targeted because of her commitment to education. If she had not been in that Dapchi technical girls school on that particular day, she would not have been picked up. She would not have been kept in captivity till date. So, if people value girl-child education, they need to stand up and do more.”
Para-Mallam stressed that greater investment in education and stronger protection for schools are necessary to ensure that young girls can learn in safe environments without fear of violence or abduction.
