Bishop Matthew Kukah, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, has stated that former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon holds a special place in his heart.
In an interview from 21:29 with Arise TV on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, Kukah said his mother strongly believed that the military coup that removed Gowon from power was a great act of betrayal. He said his mother felt that the overthrow of Gowon by people close to him was one of the highest forms of human treachery.
Kukah said after he became a Catholic priest, his mother warned him to be careful about the company he keeps.
