During an interview from 1:45 on Arise Television on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, Adams Oshiomhole spoke about leadership within the Nigerian Senate and the process through which Senate presidents emerge and retain their positions.

Oshiomhole made the remarks while discussing debates surrounding ranking, tenure, and leadership structure in the Senate, particularly comments relating to the current Senate president, Godswill Akpabio. He argued that Senate leadership should primarily depend on the confidence and support of fellow lawmakers rather than technical arguments over ranking or consecutive terms.

Speaking during the interview, Oshiomhole said, “I hold the view that this is just, for me, he’s not adding value to the process. Nothing stops any senator from being Senate president for as long as, first, his people elect him or reelect him and his colleagues accept him. There is no shortcut to it. That is why I gave an example of Distinguished Senator David Mark. He held that office for eight years. And all he needed to do to hold the office for eight years was to earn and sustain and service the trust line between the senior presidency and the distinguished senators.
