According to a report by Vanguard News, on Saturday, March 21, 2026, the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, raised serious concerns over rising insecurity in the South-West, warning that the region is being slowly overtaken by violence and criminal activities.

He questioned why political leaders seem more focused on the 2027 election while citizens and traditional rulers are under threat.

Adams explained that insecurity in the South-West has escalated due to inadequate preparation and the politicisation of security initiatives.

He expressed disappointment in how Amotekun, the regional security outfit, is being run. “Even the recruitment into the Amotekun that we agitated for has been highly politicised.

Some state actors have seen it as a place to give employment to their political followers.

The issue of security must not be like that. If you want to achieve any goal from security, you have to look at the background of the people you recruit to that security outfit because it is a case of life and death,” he said.

He revealed that terrorists have killed about seven monarchs in the South-West, including Yoruba-speaking areas in Kwara State, and that many community heads continue to face threats.

Adams criticised governors and other stakeholders for not responding to his repeated calls for collaboration and action against insecurity.

The Aare Onakakanfo also noted that some politicians are fuelling divisions among traditional rulers, preventing them from uniting against growing security threats.

He warned that this neglect mirrors historical situations where territories were lost due to internal disunity.

On the issue of state police, Adams called for urgent implementation, arguing that local recruitment and proper oversight could significantly reduce insecurity.

He also pointed out that insecurity has, in some areas, become a business venture, with collusion among criminals, politicians, and even local actors.

Adams asked, “Everyone was concerned about the 2027 election. Must we wait until they kill us like chickens before the election of 2027?”
