Veteran Nollywood actor Nkem Owoh has spoken about one of the challenges that comes with being widely recognized for comedy, revealing that he is sometimes hurt when people laugh at him during moments he considers serious.

Speaking in an interview from 26:05 aired by SELAH MEDITATE on Saturday, June 6, 2026, Owoh explained that his long-standing reputation as a comic actor often causes people to interpret his words and actions as humorous, even when he has no intention of making anyone laugh.

The actor recounted an experience at a public gathering where he was invited to offer a prayer. According to him, the reaction of some attendees left him disappointed.

Owoh said that as soon as he began the prayer with the words, “In Jesus’ name,” some people started trying to hold back their laughter, apparently associating his presence with comedy rather than the solemn occasion.

He noted that the incident upset him because he regards prayer as a serious matter and does not treat his faith lightly.

In his words, “I remember attending a gathering where I was asked to pray. The moment I said, ‘In Jesus’ name,’ some people started suppressing laughter. It really annoyed me because I don’t joke with my prayers.”

The veteran actor added that while he appreciates the love people have for his comedic roles, there are moments when he wishes people would separate his on-screen character from his real-life personality, especially during serious or spiritual engagements.
