Security analyst Babagana Wakil has said the United States possesses the technological capability to monitor terrorist movements across Nigeria’s border regions through advanced surveillance systems, following a recent military operation that reportedly eliminated a top ISIS commander in Borno State.
Wakil made the statement during an interview aired on Arise News while reacting to the Nigerian military’s announcement that troops of Operation Hadin Kai, working alongside United States partners, carried out a successful operation in Marte, a strategic border town in northern Borno State.
According to the military, the operation led to the killing of Abu Bilal al-Munuki, described as ISIS’ global second-in-command and one of the most senior terrorist figures operating in the Lake Chad region.
Speaking from 2:11 on the development, Wakil argued that such operations could have been carried out earlier following increased US military involvement in Nigeria.
He said, “I believe US has the capacity to monitor the movement of those terrorists through surveillance systems.
Wakil explained that insurgents frequently move through border routes connecting Nigeria with neighboring countries such as Chad and Cameroon, making surveillance a critical part of counterterrorism operations.
He noted that the porous nature of the borders has long provided insurgent groups with opportunities to move fighters, weapons, and logistics across the Lake Chad Basin.
