According to a report by Punch on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North, has called for the revocation of operating licences granted to South African firms in Nigeria, including MTN Group and MultiChoice, following renewed xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa.
His position comes amid growing concern within the National Assembly over the safety of Nigerian citizens abroad.
The Senate deliberation followed a separate resolution by the House of Representatives condemning the attacks and urging the Federal Government to take urgent diplomatic steps.
Lawmakers stressed the need for a stronger response to protect Nigerians and deter further violence.
Oshiomhole argued that Nigeria must adopt a firm stance rooted in reciprocity, maintaining that continued tolerance without consequences could embolden further hostility.
He proposed the nationalisation of MTN’s operations in Nigeria and the withdrawal of its licence, citing the scale of revenue repatriation from the country.
He added that similar action should be taken against DStv, alleging economic imbalance and unfair practices.
“I call on the Federal Government to revoke DSTV, which is also a South African company that is cutting away millions of dollars,” he said.
The former Edo State governor further suggested that revoking these licences could open opportunities for indigenous companies while reinforcing Nigeria’s economic sovereignty.
He linked the ongoing attacks to internal political dynamics in South Africa, noting that anti-immigrant rhetoric has increasingly influenced public attitudes.
Also contributing to the debate, Senator Victor Umeh raised alarm over reports that Nigerians in South Africa are living in fear and facing restrictions to movement.
