Nigerian Ambassador to South Africa, Temitope Ajayi, has provided an on-the-ground assessment of the situation in South Africa amid concerns over reported xenophobic attacks, stating that key cities currently remain calm.
Speaking during an interview from 3:45 on Channels Television, Ajayi addressed growing fears among Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora regarding the safety of citizens in South Africa. His remarks come against the backdrop of recurring tensions and sporadic violence historically linked to xenophobic sentiments in parts of the country.
Providing firsthand insight, the ambassador said, “I’m particularly in Pretoria right now and the situation is relatively calm. Also in Johannesburg, it’s calm.” His statement appears to counter widespread alarm on social media and in some reports suggesting escalating unrest targeting foreign nationals, including Nigerians.
Ajayi emphasized that, based on his observations and available information, there is no immediate cause for panic in the major urban centers he referenced.
