Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, has argued that economic hardship is not new in Nigeria, recalling how his parents struggled to pay his secondary school fees.
Speaking in an interview from 16:55 with AIT, Olayinka said his school fees were initially ₦20, but his parents could not afford the amount. By the third term, the fee had increased to ₦40, which they still struggled to pay.
He drew a comparison between the financial difficulties families faced at the time and the challenges Nigerians experience today, saying that earning ₦40 then could be as difficult as making ₦40,000 now.
Recalling his experience, Olayinka said, “When I was in secondary school that school fees was introduced, 20 naira school fees then my parents could not pay 20 naira. When it got to 3rd term the money was already 40 naira, not 40 thousand naira and my parents could not pay”
