Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has recalled the welfare package introduced for judges during his tenure as Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, saying the state provided them with houses, cars and medical support.
In a video from from 9:34 shared by Channels Television, Osinbajo explained that the reforms were introduced in 2001 as part of efforts to improve judges’ welfare and strengthen the judiciary.
Under the arrangement, every judge was entitled to a four-bedroom house with a boys’ quarters, with the beneficiary allowed to choose a location from areas where the state had properties, including Ikeja, Lekki and Ikoyi. The houses were provided for the judges to keep for life.
The package also included cars that could be renewed every four years, medical support and increased salaries. Osinbajo said the government also took steps to address corruption within the judiciary by referring allegations against judicial officers to the National Judicial Council (NJC) and implementing its recommendations rather than protecting those accused.
Describing the housing arrangement, Osinbajo said, “We then decided that every judge in Lagos must have a house of their own. The moment you become a judge we give you a house, you chose where you want your house and it could be Ikeja, Lekki or Ikoyi. These are places where we had properties, and it is your house for life. The moment you become a judge you also get a big home: four bedrooms, boys quarters and all that. We gave them cars, renewable every four years, medical support as well”
