Lawyer Maxwell Opara has urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to abandon his presidential ambition and support Peter Obi, saying such a move would help build a stronger and more united opposition capable of challenging the ruling party in future elections.
Speaking during an interview from 10:26 on Arise News on Thursday, 23 July, 2026, Opara argued that the opposition would stand a better chance if its leaders put aside personal ambitions and rallied behind a single candidate. He said unity among opposition politicians was necessary to present a credible alternative to Nigerians.
According to Opara, “Let Atiku drop his presidential ambition and support Peter Obi so that we can get a formidable opposition.”
The lawyer said the opposition has continued to struggle because of divisions among its leading figures. He noted that having multiple presidential aspirants from different opposition parties could weaken their chances at the polls and make it easier for the ruling party to retain power.
