In a recent interview on Silverbird N24, legal practitioner Maxwell Opara spoke on the state of Nigerian democracy and the behavior of political leaders whose actions he says undermine the country’s progress.

During the interview from 5:47, Opara stated, “Look at what Akpabio and Abbas are doing; they care only about the money, not Nigeria.” He used the statement to emphasize how some prominent political figures prioritize personal gain over national interest, contributing to a decline in public trust and the weakening of democratic institutions.

Opara explained that the actions of leaders focused on personal enrichment have far-reaching consequences, including political instability and a compromised electoral process. According to him, when influential figures disregard national priorities, it becomes difficult for citizens to have confidence in governance and the fairness of elections.

He further argued that both political parties and institutions, including the Independent National Electoral Commission and the judiciary, must insist on accountability and transparency. Opara highlighted that adherence to legal and ethical standards is essential to protect democracy and prevent the erosion of public trust.

The legal practitioner also warned that if political actors continue to act primarily in pursuit of personal wealth, Nigeria’s democratic system will face serious challenges. Opara concluded by urging leaders and institutions to put Nigeria first, stressing that the future of the nation depends on prioritizing the collective interest over individual enrichment. He called for decisive action to safeguard democratic norms and ensure that elections reflect the will of the people. Read_More…
