Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has criticised the Federal Government over the recent handover of official houses to judges in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), questioning the legal basis for the gesture.
Falana made the remarks during a broadcast aired by News Central TV, where he reacted to the commissioning of newly built residences in the Federal Capital Territory for members of the judiciary.
Expressing concern over the development, the senior lawyer said he was troubled by the manner in which the houses were presented to judges.
“It was very sad when I saw that the Federal Government was handing over the keys of houses to judges, and I asked myself, under what law are we operating from?” Falana said.
He argued that government welfare policies should be implemented fairly across the public service rather than appearing to favour one arm of government over others.
According to Falana, public officials should benefit from welfare programmes based on transparent legal frameworks and policies that promote equity and accountability.
He maintained that the issue was not necessarily about improving the welfare of judges, but about ensuring that such benefits are provided in accordance with the law and applied consistently across the public sector.
