Former Senate President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Adolphus Wabara, has chosen not to engage in a war of words with Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), following Wike’s recent derogatory comments about him.
During a live interview on national television over the weekend, Wike criticized Wabara while discussing the leadership crisis within the PDP. He expressed strong disapproval of Wabara, referencing his tenure as Senate President and making disparaging remarks about his integrity. Wike claimed if Wabara was his father, he would have disowned him.
According to The Vanguard, it was reported that in response to these remarks, Senator Wabara said he would not lower himself to exchanging insults with the FCT Minister. As an elder statesman who once held the esteemed position of Nigeria’s Number Three Citizen, Wabara claimed engaging in such disputes would be beneath his dignity.
He expressed disappointment that Wike, as a Minister of the Federal Republic and a former Governor, would resort to unguarded and disrespectful statements. Wabara noted that it was inappropriate for someone in Wike’s position to speak without thought or restraint, adding that such behavior reflects poorly on his maturity and sense of responsibility.
Wabara concluded that decorum and respect should guide public discourse, especially among leaders, and described Wike’s behavior as unbecoming of a man of honor.
He said, “Frankly for a son to disown his father, his father must have wronged him terribly. Can Wike please tell the world what it is I did wrong to him?”
Further talking, he said, “Talking about corruption, Nigerians know those who are corrupt. And I can proudly say, and beat my chest that I am not one of them. I, Adolphus Wabara, I am not corrupt!”
