According to a report by The Times Of Israel on July 13, 2026, former senior US diplomat Alan Eyre, who was part of the American negotiating team for the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement, said the recent conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran has significantly altered the strategic balance across the Middle East, creating uncertainty about the region’s future stability.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, Eyre argued that the military confrontation has disrupted a long-established regional framework. “With the war in June, and to a lesser extent last year as well, President Trump took the complex system and broke it,” Eyre told Al Jazeera. “It’s going to take time for this complex system in the Persian Gulf area to find a new balance, a new homeostasis. I don’t know how long it will take; I don’t know what it’ll be. But we do know it won’t be like it was before.”

He warned that the consequences of those developments could make the region more volatile. According to Eyre, “that’s unfortunate, because the new region is going to be far less stable, and Iran will be far more dangerous”.

Eyre also suggested that Washington may ultimately have to “accept increased Iranian control” of the Strait of Hormuz if it hopes to secure a renewed nuclear agreement with Tehran. He indicated that such a move could become part of broader diplomatic efforts aimed at restoring negotiations after months of escalating tensions.

The former diplomat further highlighted what he described as a widening gap between the strategic priorities of the United States and Israel. “The US and Israel, at this point, have differing strategic goals,” Eyre said. “The US just wants to cut its losses, get the strait open, and move away, because it’s a quagmire.
