According to a report by Punch, on Saturday May 9, 2026, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Economic Affairs, Tope Fasua, has urged Nigerians to adjust their spending habits to match their income, stating that households should live within their means and cut their coat according to their size as economic pressure continues to rise in the country.
He made the remarks during a Coffee Hangout event in Abuja organised by the Kay Hikers Club, a video shared on Instagram showed a heated exchange between him and an attendee who raised concerns about rising living costs, insecurity, and falling purchasing power.
The woman stated that basic food items had become too expensive for many families, she noted that products like tomatoes no longer sell at low prices as they did years ago, she said many households now struggle to afford daily meals and linked this situation to hardship and growing street crime.
Fasua disagreed with the view that the situation was as bad as described, he said Nigerians sometimes exaggerate economic challenges, while he admitted that prices have gone up, he insisted that people can still manage their resources better through planning and discipline.
He explained that a modest family can still feed for several days on about ₦10,000 if they shop carefully and cook at home, he said he personally buys food items from markets in Abuja, including Wuse and Utako markets.
“A modest family will feed for several days with ₦10,000 if you cut your coat according to your cloth. You can go to the market, I go to the market too. I have customers in Utako market, in Wuse market. I like shopping. I like going to the market. I test things. You can buy foodstuff which you cook at home,” he said….Read_More…
