NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has described the latest killings in Benue and Plateau states as painful and deeply disturbing, saying the continued violence shows the urgent need to improve security across Nigeria.
Reacting through his X account, Obi expressed sadness over reports that at least 16 people were killed in the Otukpo-Nobi community of Benue State. He also mourned the killing of nine members of the same family, including a two-month-old baby, in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
He said communities in Benue, Plateau and other parts of the country have suffered years of violence, forcing many families to live in fear while others have lost loved ones, abandoned their homes and farms, or been displaced.
Obi stressed that protecting lives and property remains the primary duty of any government. He said every Nigerian life is valuable and should never be treated as just another statistic.
He called on the authorities to go beyond condemning attacks after they happen and instead build a security system that focuses on intelligence, quick response and accountability. He also urged security agencies to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible for the killings to end what he described as a culture of impunity.
Obi extended his condolences to the families of the victims and the governments and people of Benue and Plateau states. He added that the issue is about protecting human lives and ensuring Nigerians can live without fear.
