A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former presidential aide, Lauretta Onochie, has sparked fresh debate with her comments on the likely outcome of the 2027 presidential election.

In a post shared on her verified X account on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, she argued that the southern region of Nigeria does not currently have sufficient numerical strength to secure electoral victory on its own.

Her lengthy statement attracted significant public attention, as she suggested that this reality would eventually influence political alignments, with voters potentially leaning toward a northern candidate in the next election cycle.

Onochie further explained that votes in the southern part of the country are divided among multiple contenders, weakening the region’s overall electoral strength. She also claimed that many in the north view the current administration of President Bola Tinubu as underperforming, which, in her view, could affect their willingness to support a southern candidate.
