In a recent interview from 34:36 on News Central TV, David Mark, Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, spoke on party disputes, electoral interpretation, and the ongoing tensions surrounding opposition realignment in Nigeria’s political space.

During the interview, Mark stated, “We just told INEC that we do not agree with their interpretation of the status quo ante bellum.” He used the remark to explain the position of the ADC in its engagement with the Independent National Electoral Commission over issues relating to party recognition and internal restructuring.

Mark argued that the disagreement reflects deeper concerns within the political system about how regulatory decisions are interpreted and applied to opposition parties. According to him, the ADC’s position is that electoral authorities must ensure neutrality and consistency when handling matters that affect party legitimacy and leadership disputes.

He maintained that the phrase “status quo ante bellum” in this context represents a contested interpretation of political and legal conditions following internal party developments. He stressed that differing interpretations between political parties and INEC can lead to uncertainty, especially when they affect recognition and participation in the electoral process.

The ADC chairman further explained that Nigeria’s multiparty democracy depends on clear communication and predictable enforcement of electoral guidelines. He noted that when interpretations differ significantly, it creates room for prolonged disputes that may weaken public confidence in democratic institutions.

Mark also emphasized the importance of institutional dialogue, urging electoral bodies and political parties to maintain open channels of communication to resolve disagreements before they escalate into broader political conflicts.

He concluded by reaffirming that the ADC remains committed to democratic principles and lawful engagement, stressing that clarity, fairness, and consistency are essential for strengthening Nigeria’s electoral system ahead of future elections. Read_More…
