According to a report by Leadership News on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, former Anambra State governor and presidential candidate Peter Obi has been under increasing fire from Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, who has cast doubt on Obi’s capacity to maintain consistent party leadership.
Also, he said that the opposition figures’ attempts to build a coalition were motivated by personal goals and not the country’s best interests.
Keeping the peace and stability of the country at the forefront of all political efforts was Wike’s key point during Wednesday’s monthly media briefing in Abuja.
Political actors, he argued, should not act in their own self-interest but rather in the public interest as a whole.
In the course of the discussion, the minister for the federal capital territory voiced his scepticism over the likelihood of a cohesive opposition alliance that may provide a serious challenge to the current administration in the general elections of 2027.
According to him, the coalition talks would not lead to anything useful because they are unrealistic.
Wike went on to criticise Atiku Abubakar, a prominent African Democratic Congress member and former vice president, implying that Abubakar’s recent political actions were driven more by selfish ambitions than a sincere desire to advance common political goals.
As part of his analysis of Peter Obi’s political career, Wike highlighted what he saw as an ongoing trend of party switching without addressing internal disputes.
He said that this kind of behaviour shows that the party’s leadership lacks the skills to manage and stabilise the organization.
Referring to his personal experience within the Peoples Democratic Party, the minister went on to stress the need of loyalty and tenacity in politics.
He mentioned that he stayed in the party and tried to solve its problems instead of leaving, even though there were differences amongst party members.
Additionally, Wike emphasised that his party’s performance in gaining substantial positions in Rivers State was unaffected by his choice to back President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election.
“Let me tell you what I don’t like in this country. Obi was in APGA. He couldn’t build APGA — crisis. What is good in leadership? Leadership is for you to stand up to challenges and see how you settle those crises,” he said…Read_More…
