‎According to a report by The Sun, on Friday May 15, 2026, Prince Paul Ikonne, an All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial aspirant for Abia South, has criticized the promise by former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, to serve only a single four-year term if elected president.

‎Ikonne stated that such a pledge does not reflect the interest of the South-East region, he argued that when the time comes for the Igbo to produce a president, it should be for a full eight-year tenure like other parts of the country, he made the comments during a media interaction in Abuja.

‎According to him, no serious political arrangement in Nigeria supports a shortened presidency, he insisted that the South-East should not accept what he described as a limited-term presidency, he added that the region should focus on producing a president who will complete two terms if given the mandate.

‎Ikonne expressed confidence that the ruling party would perform strongly in the 2027 elections in the South-East, he said the votes for Tinubu would come from different parts of the region where Igbo people live, not only within the core South-East states.
