Israeli opposition leaders have urged citizens to vote as the country headed to the polls, with prominent political figures calling for a change in leadership after years under Benjamin Netanyahu.
Avigdor Lieberman, Israel’s former finance minister and leader of the Yisrael Beiteinu party, called on voters to make their voices heard, declaring his intention to end Netanyahu’s time in power.
In a message posted on X, Lieberman stated, “I’m putting an end to the Benjamin Netanyahu era”.
Former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, who leads the Together alliance, also urged Israelis to participate in the election, telling voters that “now it’s your time and yours to go to the polls”.
Gadi Eisenkot, a former chief of the Israeli military and leader of the Yashar party, also addressed voters as the election got underway. He said “today’s victory is for the next generation”.
The opposition leaders made their appeals as Netanyahu sought to retain his position as Israel’s longest-serving leader, having spent 19 years in office across different periods.
Netanyahu’s campaign has emphasized his record as a wartime leader and his relationship with United States President Donald Trump. Trump has publicly endorsed the Israeli prime minister, placing their political alliance among the prominent issues surrounding the campaign.
The two leaders have also joined forces in waging war against Iran, making the conflict a significant part of the wider political landscape surrounding the election.
