Former US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman has expressed concern about the future of Jewish communities in Western Europe, naming the United Kingdom and France among the countries he believes have become increasingly difficult places for Jews to look forward to living.

Friedman made the remarks in an interview from 00:44:33 with a JNS host in Jerusalem, in a video published on Sunday, October 25, 2026. The discussion focused on the spread of views against Israel in educational institutions and politics, with Friedman arguing that Israel and its supporters are currently losing that battle.

Describing his concerns about the future of Jews in Europe, Friedman said, “I’ve never in my life, 68 years old, never seen circumstances where Jews have so little to look forward to in Europe. I mean, it’s especially Western Europe. I think Europe’s lost. I think England’s lost. I think France has lost.

“I hope Italy doesn’t get lost, because it’s a great country. I love visiting there. But it may be lost. And what does that mean for the Jewish people? Could that ultimately be what happens to America? Sure hope not, but you’ve got to think about that,”

Friedman singled out Italy as a country he hopes will avoid a similar trajectory, while expressing uncertainty about its future. He also raised the possibility that the United States could eventually face comparable challenges.

He argued that Jewish life today has two principal centres, the United States and Israel, and stressed the importance of ensuring that America does not follow the path he believes Europe is taking.
