In a recent interview from 6:41 with Trust TV on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, Sheikh Muhammad Nuru Khalid, the Founder of the Islamic Research and Da’awah Foundation, spoke about the role religion could play in shaping voters’ decisions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
During the interview, Khalid argued that asking Nigerians to support President Bola Tinubu simply because he is a Muslim could actually undermine the case being made for the President. He stated, “If you are telling people to vote for BAT because you are a Muslim, you are condemning him.”
The cleric explained that making religion the primary reason for supporting Tinubu could give the impression that his backers lack more convincing arguments based on the administration’s performance, policies and accomplishments. He stressed that political candidates should instead be evaluated according to their capacity to tackle the country’s pressing problems.
Khalid acknowledged that religious leaders have the right to express their political views, including their position on a Muslim-Muslim ticket. However, he cautioned against statements capable of deepening divisions between Christians and Muslims.
He encouraged religious and political leaders to direct attention toward critical national concerns, including insecurity, economic hardship, healthcare, education and effective governance.
The Islamic scholar further urged Nigerians to examine the track records, character, competence and policies of political candidates rather than allowing religious identity to determine their choices.
According to him, relying heavily on religion during elections risks distracting voters from the issues that have a direct impact on their daily lives.
Khalid therefore called on Nigerians to approach the 2027 election with careful consideration and make informed choices, emphasizing the importance of electing leaders committed to justice, accountability, security and competent governance rather than those seeking support primarily through religious affiliation.
