Legal practitioner Kalu Kalu has accused the Federal Government of showing intolerance toward opposition figures, arguing that recent developments involving prominent political leaders point to what he described as an unhealthy democratic environment.

Kalu made the remarks during an interview from 1:57 on Channels Television, on Friday, 10 July, 2026 while reacting to concerns over what he called the ruling party’s intolerance toward opposition parties.

He cited the situation involving former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and comments by former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, saying the developments should concern Nigerians regardless of political affiliation.

Speaking during the interview, Kalu said, “This is a government that is not comfortable with opposition leaders. Today, Mallam El-Rufai is in detention for a bailable offense. And today, Mr Peter Obi is raising some concern about his life. You don’t wait until it gets to you before you cry out.”

According to the legal practitioner, democracy thrives when political actors are free to express opposing views without fear of intimidation or persecution. He argued that the protection of opposition voices is essential to preserving democratic values and ensuring that citizens continue to enjoy their constitutional rights.

Kalu maintained that allegations or concerns raised by opposition leaders should not be dismissed outright but should instead be addressed through lawful and transparent processes.
