Minister of Defence Retired General Christopher Musa has revealed that a significant number of individuals who joined terrorist groups did so not out of genuine conviction, but because they were deliberately misled about their purpose or exploited due to poverty.

Speaking from 18:58 on Arise TV, Musa said, “Some of the terrorists were deceived into thinking that they were fighting for God. Some of them were deceived because they were poor and felt that was the only way they could have something, because those guys had money to give them. They enticed them with money and promised them heaven and earth, and so they joined. So when we treat those ones and give them skills, they are rehabilitated back into the community.”

Musa said the monitoring of rehabilitated individuals had so far produced encouraging results, with none of those reintegrated into their communities reported to have returned to criminal or terrorist activity.
