In a video from 11:24 shared by Sahara TV, Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, stated that local police were used to harass members of opposition parties before the local police system was abolished in 1979.

Falana stated that before 1979, local police were often used to oppress members of opposition parties like Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU) in the North and Action Group (AG) in the West. He said that in some cases, a dead body would be secretly dumped in the home of an opposition member while they were asleep. He stated that the next morning, the opposition member would be arrested by local police and accused of murder.

Falana said the local police officers also beat and illegally detained opposition members. He stated that because of these abuses, Nigerians agreed to end local police and create a federal police system.
