Former Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs Bolaji Akinyemi has shared his observations regarding the recent state visit of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the United Kingdom, describing how certain moments during the trip shaped public perception of Nigeria’s leadership on the global stage.
Speaking during an interview from 10:56 broadcast on Arise News, Akinyemi explained that beyond diplomatic discussions and official engagements, symbolic moments during state visits can carry significant meaning both domestically and internationally.
According to the former minister, one particular moment during the president’s visit to Windsor attracted his attention. He recalled watching as President Tinubu climbed a set of steps during the visit, noting that the moment made him anxious at first.
Akinyemi said that observing the president confidently climb the steps became symbolic of resilience and stability in leadership. In his words, his “heart was in his mouth” when he initially saw the moment unfold, but the president’s composure reassured him.
He further explained that state visits often involve more than formal agreements or diplomatic meetings. According to him, such trips also serve as opportunities to project an image of strength, stability, and continuity to international partners and observers.
The former minister emphasized that gestures, body language, and physical presence during international engagements can influence how a country’s leadership is perceived abroad. He noted that visible signs of composure from a head of state can strengthen diplomatic confidence and reinforce bilateral relationships.
Akinyemi added that Nigeria’s engagement with long-standing partners like the United Kingdom remains important for diplomatic cooperation, trade relations, and international collaboration. He suggested that visits of this nature help maintain Nigeria’s visibility in global affairs while reaffirming its commitment to international partnerships.
According to him, moments that demonstrate confidence and vitality from national leaders can play a subtle but meaningful role in shaping how other nations view a country’s political stability and leadership continuity. Read_More…
