Akin Fapounda, an Afenifere chieftain, has raised concerns about possible ethnic tension if the political alliance between Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso disrupts the chances of a southern presidency in the 2027 election cycle. He spoke during an interview on Symfoni Tv on May 9, 2026.

During the interview from 3:40, Fapounda discussed the political atmosphere surrounding President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and reactions that could emerge if another coalition gains power. He explained that some people may interpret such a development as an attempt by the Igbo political bloc and northern interests to deny the Yoruba region another presidential term.

He also stated that dissatisfaction with Tinubu’s performance does not automatically mean Yoruba people would oppose him politically. According to him, the situation could still create strong ethnic suspicion and rivalry between both groups.
