Omoyele Sowore has recalled rejecting N800,000 offered to him by the late Chief MKO Abiola following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

Speaking in an exclusive interview from 30:16 with Sahara TV, the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate said he was president of the University of Lagos Students’ Union when military ruler Ibrahim Babangida annulled the election. He said he joined other students in organising protests against the decision.

Sowore said he and some students later visited Abiola’s residence, where they met several politicians gathered with bags of money. According to him, he warned Abiola that many of the politicians present would eventually betray him.

He said Abiola then took N800,000 from a bag of cash and offered it to him, but he refused to accept the money. Sowore recalled that the late politician was surprised by his response.

Recalling the exchange, Sowore said, “He had a duffle bag full of cash, he counted 800 thousand naira and gave me. I said ‘Chief, I didn’t come here to collect money so take your money’. He said ‘I have never given anybody money before that rejected it'”
