Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ireti Kingibe, has alleged that the removal of security features from ballot papers was never part of the electoral reform bill that the National Assembly originally passed.

Speaking in an interview from 15:28 with Arise TV, Sen. Ireti expressed shock at the change. “They were not in the original ones and I can show you the documents that I have. Since when and in what previous election have we ever conducted a vote where ballot papers did not have security features? Where you could bring any type of ballot paper and vote with it? It’s never happened. And so when somebody was mentioning it to me, I said, ‘No, no, no. I didn’t see that part. It couldn’t have been there.'”

Kingibe revealed that she served on the committee that worked on the electoral reforms for two years, producing a document that both the Senate and the House of Representatives developed jointly in a bicameral sitting alongside INEC and civil society organisations, with the shared goal of guaranteeing free and fair elections.
