Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to strengthen the country’s naval capabilities, warning that its enemies are seeking to threaten its Mediterranean maritime territory, seaports and shipping activities.

According to The Times of Israel on Sunday, October 4, 2026, Netanyahu made the remarks during a visit to an Israeli navy base in Ashdod alongside Defense Minister Israel Katz.

He described the maritime domain as an increasingly important arena for international conflict, pointing to threats around the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb involving Iran and the Houthis, respectively.

Netanyahu said Israel would not allow its adversaries to endanger its maritime interests.

“Our enemies want to threaten our maritime domain in the Mediterranean Sea, our seaports and maritime traffic. Of course, we will not allow that to happen,” Netanyahu said.

He also disclosed that Israeli security officials are seeking additional submarines, naval vessels and other military capabilities to expand the navy’s strength.

“a sixth submarine has arrived in Israel; they want more — more vessels and other capabilities that I do not intend to detail here,” he said.

Netanyahu further stated that he wants Israel to become a leading force in both surface and undersea naval warfare.

Expressing his ambition for the country’s naval forces, Netanyahu said he wants Israel to become “one of the world leaders” in both areas.
