In an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, clarified that he was not part of the meeting where some governors reportedly expressed their inability to pay the proposed N62,000 minimum wage. As a member of the negotiating committee and a former unionist, Idris has been mediating between the federal government and organized labor on the minimum wage issue, as reported by Vanguard Newspaper.
“I was not part of the meeting, if it was even held, and I will not be part of those who will not pay the agreed minimum wage,” he stated. “Like I said at different public fora, I will pay the agreed amount, I stand by that.”
Idris emphasized his commitment to workers’ welfare and better pay, saying, “As a crusader for workers’ welfare and better pay, I will not abandon my people in this trying time.” He continued, “As a member of the tripartite committee, I will continue to negotiate in favor of Nigerian workers.”
The governor urged the federal government and organized labor to find a common ground for a sustainable living wage, pledging to implement the agreed sum for Kebbi State workers.
