In a recent interview from 22:22 with Symfoni TV on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, Zekeri Idris, spokesperson and media aide to Peter Obi, responded to remarks attributed to Daniel Bwala regarding Cardinal John Onaiyekan and the ongoing disagreement involving the Catholic Church and the presidency.
During the interview, Idris expressed strong disapproval of what he viewed as inappropriate remarks against the Catholic cardinal, saying, “You can abuse me or anybody else, but not Cardinal Onaiyekan.”
Idris argued that political differences should not be used as justification for attacking religious figures who speak about issues affecting the country. He described Onaiyekan as a highly respected personality whose decades of service to both the Catholic Church and Nigeria should be considered when responding to his public comments.
According to him, the cardinal had given up various personal opportunities in order to dedicate himself to religious duties and public service. Idris said Onaiyekan’s comments on national matters should therefore be viewed from the perspective of his responsibilities as a religious leader and his engagement with Nigerians facing difficult circumstances.
The NDC spokesperson maintained that Nigerians have the right to disagree with the cardinal’s opinions, but such disagreements should be handled with civility and respect.
He also criticised what he described as an increasing practice among politicians and their aides of directing personal attacks at individuals who raise concerns about government policies.
Idris urged political leaders and their supporters to address the substance of criticisms made by religious leaders rather than resorting to insults or personal attacks.
He concluded that meaningful national dialogue would be strengthened if public officials responded to opposing views with facts, evidence and constructive arguments instead of engaging in verbal attacks.
