During an interview from 4:31 on Arise Television on Saturday, August 1, 2026, John Onaiyekan spoke about a recent meeting between Christian leaders and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, during which they discussed the country’s economic situation and its impact on ordinary Nigerians.
Speaking about the visit, the former Archbishop of Abuja said the delegation used the meeting to convey its concerns over the hardship facing many Nigerians. He explained that while the church leaders believed the economy was worsening the living conditions of poor citizens, President Tinubu disagreed with their assessment and maintained that the economy was performing well.
According to him, “When the nation is bleeding, you can’t expect a polite meeting with the head of state. We need to let him know. And his reply is that the nation is not bleeding. We told him our economy is not helping our poor people. He told us our economy is doing fine. Practically speaking, he told us quite clearly that he did not agree with us. Again, I said, ‘We’re not surprised. We didn’t expect him to agree with us. We have done our duty.’”
Onaiyekan said the purpose of the meeting was to present the concerns of the church over the country’s economic challenges and the welfare of Nigerians.
