Peter Obi, the NDC presidential candidate, has said that if he becomes Nigeria’s president in 2027, all public office holders will be required to declare their assets every year, following a system similar to the one used in Indonesia.
Speaking during an interview from 18:40 shared by Advocacy for Good Governance, Obi said tackling corruption would be one of his top priorities. He argued that the fight against corruption must begin with a free, fair and credible electoral process.
According to him, politicians who win elections fairly are less likely to engage in corruption because they would not have spent money bribing their way into office. He added that transparent elections would also reduce the cost of politics and improve public trust in government.
Obi described corruption as one of Nigeria’s biggest problems, saying it encourages people to make money without contributing to the country’s economic growth. He stressed that reducing corruption would help shift Nigeria from a consumption-driven economy to one focused on production and job creation.
The former Anambra State governor also expressed concern that many government officials are wealthier than business owners and entrepreneurs, saying this is unhealthy for any economy and a sign that the system needs urgent reform.
When asked whether he would declare his own assets if elected president, Obi said he would go beyond that by ensuring every public office holder declares their assets annually. He said the policy would promote transparency, strengthen accountability and help rebuild public confidence in government.
