Grey hair is a natural part of ageing, but some people begin noticing white or grey strands earlier than expected. This happens when hair follicles produce less melanin, the pigment responsible for hair colour. Although some home remedies are promoted as ways to reverse grey hair, there is limited scientific evidence that they can restore lost pigment. Here are five remedies people commonly use and what you should know about them.
1. Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is commonly used to moisturise the hair, reduce protein loss, and help protect hair strands from damage. You can massage a small amount into your hair and scalp before washing. However, coconut oil has not been proven to reverse grey hair or restore its original colour.
2. Black Tea
Some people use strongly brewed black tea as a hair rinse because its dark colour may temporarily stain lighter strands. Allow the tea to cool completely before applying it to your hair, and test a small area first to check for irritation. The colour effect is temporary, and black tea does not restore the natural pigment inside hair follicles.
3. Amla, Also Known As Indian Gooseberry
Amla is used in traditional hair-care practices and contains vitamin C and other plant compounds. Amla oils and hair products may help condition the hair, depending on their ingredients, but there is insufficient reliable evidence that amla can reverse grey hair. Choose products carefully and stop using them if they irritate your scalp.
4. Eat Foods Rich In Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 is important for healthy blood cells and normal nerve function. A deficiency may sometimes be associated with premature greying, although most age-related grey hair is not caused by a vitamin deficiency. Include foods such as eggs, fish, milk, and meat if they fit your diet. If your hair is greying unusually early or you have other symptoms of deficiency, a healthcare professional can determine whether testing is appropriate.
5. Eat A Balanced Diet Rich In Essential Nutrients
Your hair needs adequate protein, iron, copper, zinc, and other nutrients to grow normally. Include foods such as beans, eggs, fish, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains in your meals. Correcting a confirmed nutritional deficiency may help address a contributing factor, but taking extra vitamins when you are not deficient is unlikely to reverse ordinary grey hair.
