Okpe Matthew, a worker who helped clear land in Abuja for construction before it became the capital, has shared a strange experience he had while working in the Jabi area.
Speaking during an interview with Brekete Family, a human rights program, Matthew said that he was operating a caterpillar machine near Jabi lake when the machine suddenly got stuck in the water. He said as he sat there in the machine he saw something that looked like a mermaid, which frightened him so much that he remained inside his machine, unable to move.
Matthew said his foreman later arrived at the scene and told him to move the machine but he explained that he couldn’t because it was stuck. He said that the machine remained in that spot for three days until a sacrifice was performed at the site.
In Matthew’s words: “When I was clearing (bush) at Jabi dam there was water in the area and my caterpillar machine sank. Then I saw something like a mermaid and it scared me, so I couldn’t get out of my caterpillar machine again. When my foreman arrived he instructed me to remove the machine from the area, but I told him I couldn’t.The machine remained stuck in that spot for 3 days until they performed a ritual sacrifice there, and then my machine was finally able to come out.”
