In the midst of heated negotiations over the minimum wage between the Federal Government (FG) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Senator Shehu Sani has taken to his verified Twitter account to express his concerns over the remuneration of teachers in private schools.

His tweet, “Some Private Schools are allegedly paying their Teachers 15k monthly….Haba,” highlights a significant disparity in the educational sector’s wage structure.

Senator Sani’s tweet comes at a critical time when the NLC is demanding a substantial increase in the national minimum wage, with figures proposed as high as N494,000. The former lawmaker from Kaduna State, known for his human rights activism, has been vocal about the need for fair wages across all sectors. In a recent statement, he warned that if the FG were to agree to a minimum wage of N400,000, it would set a precedent that private employers would be expected to follow.

The current situation presents a stark contrast in the educational sector, where some private schools are reportedly paying their teachers as little as N15,000 per month. This amount is far below what is considered a living wage in Nigeria, especially in the face of rising inflation and cost of living. The senator’s use of “Haba,” an expression of disbelief or exasperation, underscores the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for reform.
