Ope Banwo, a US-based lawyer and public affairs analyst, has shared his opinion on the six-month suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Speaking in an interview with TVC from 30:50, Banwo said that according to Order 67 Rule 4, the Senate does not have the power to suspend a senator for more than 14 days. He said that she would likely win if she took the matter to court.

Banwo said that a similar case had happened before. He said when former Senator Ovie Omo-Agege was suspended, he challenged it in court and the court ruled that the Senate’s decision to suspend him for more than 14 days was invalid because the law only allows a maximum suspension of 14 days.

In Banwo’s words: “Order 67 rule 4 says they cannot suspend for more than 14 days, but they suspended her (Natasha) for 6 months. That to me is wrong. She probably would win in court, we have seen somebody do that. Omo Agege challenged it and the court was clear that you can’t suspend him for more than 14 days”
