Senator Adams Oshiomhole has sharply criticized Senate President Godswill Akpabio for permitting Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe to raise what he described as uncomfortable truths about Nigeria’s worsening kidnapping crisis.
Speaking in an interview with Voice TV from 4:18, Oshiomhole accused Akpabio of reinforcing Abaribe’s remarks instead of maintaining what he believed should be a more controlled approach to the debate.
The confrontation followed Abaribe’s explosive comments on the alleged withdrawal of troops from a Kebbi community prior to a mass kidnapping. Oshiomhole argued that by allowing Abaribe to speak extensively on the matter, Akpabio inadvertently strengthened an opposition narrative at a time when national unity should be paramount.
According to Oshiomhole, “when you invited Senator Abaribe to speak, you went on to reenforce the sentiment expressed by Senator Abaribe. Senator Abaribe is not of APC and so any attempt by anyone to distract us from what is obviously a national issue is a disservice to our collective desire to stand firm together and find the solution to what is clearly a national problem.”
The former Edo State governor insisted that while insecurity is a national concern, the Senate leadership should exercise caution in amplifying statements that may be politically weaponized. He suggested that Akpabio’s handling of the matter risked fueling controversy instead of fostering a coordinated, bipartisan response.
Oshiomhole stressed that the seriousness of the kidnapping epidemic requires discipline, strategy, and cohesion within the legislature.
