Human Rights Activist, Ben Okabwe has expressed concern over Nigeria’s criminal justice system, questioning how suspected kidnappers who had previously been arrested were allowed to return to society and allegedly resume criminal activities.

Okabwe made the remarks during the Arise News from 0:39 Town Hall on State Police, on Thursday, 9 July, 2026, where participants examined the growing insecurity across Nigeria and discussed whether the establishment of state police could strengthen security operations. Speaking during the programme, she argued that arresting criminals alone would not solve the country’s security challenges if the justice system fails to ensure accountability.

Citing a recent incident in the Federal Capital Territory, Okabwe said, “Yesterday, the police here in Abuja uncovered a group of kidnappers and 2 of the kidnappers have been arrested 4 years ago for kidnapping and they were still let back onto the street to go and kidnap again.”

She said the development raises troubling questions about the prosecution and handling of criminal cases involving violent offenders.
