Professor Udenta O. Udenta, a founding National Secretary of the defunct Alliance for Democracy (AD), has alleged that President Bola Tinubu is implementing a deliberate strategy to weaken political opposition in Southern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections.

During an interview on Arise TV from 20:36, Professor Udenta analyzed what he described as the President’s tactical approach to consolidating power in the region.

“What the president wants to do: shut down the political South to neutralize it,” Udenta stated bluntly.

The political scholar suggested that controlling Southern governors is central to this strategy, which would leave opposition figures isolated.

“If you have almost all the governors in the South and still say, ‘Oh my God, I’m only one man standing here, let political war, and I can face them’—because in the North Central, there is much more pluralities there, and diversities that anybody can meander here and there,” he explained.

Udenta identified Peter Obi and former President Goodluck Jonathan as key figures who could challenge this consolidation.

“If you have an Obi or a Jonathan, that’s an achievement,” he noted.

The professor expressed confidence in Peter Obi’s electoral strength in the Southeast, regardless of his party platform.

“If Obi runs for election in PDP, or whichever party he takes at the platform, he will sweep the Southeast,” Udenta predicted.

He further claimed that regional governors are fully aware of Obi’s political dominance in the zone.

“They know it; Mbah knows it, Alex knows it,” he said, apparently referring to Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and Abia State Governor Alex Otti.
