Ex-DSS Director Mike Ejiofor highlights a critical issue in Nigeria’s security landscape, speaking on the capacity and capability of action agencies to effectively address security challenges.

According to a video posted by Channels TV  from 15:37, despite adequate intelligence provision, Ejiofor notes that these agencies often struggle to handle complex problems, such as mineral exploitation in the northwest, where armed groups operate with impunity.

The proliferation of illegal arms, often sourced from black markets, further complicates the situation.

Ejiofor points to the example of Boko Haram bandits, who wield sophisticated arms to unleash terror on civilians.

The challenge is exacerbated by concerns over human rights violations, which can arise when the military or Air Force deploy tactics to counter these threats.

In his own words, “Intelligence provision is never lacking in Nigeria, but the problem is whether the action agencies do have to capacity or capability to handle this problems. There is the example of mineral exploitation, in the northwest. These people are dangerously armed and ready to die, they have no standard procedure, when it comes to their operation. The arms aren’t cheap and that’s why it’s illegal, but anything that is blacklisted, people tend to go more for it. If you look at the Boko haram bandits, the types of arms they carry around to unleash terror to the members of the public, it’s hard to counter them. When the military or Air Force eventually deploy their tactics, human rights activists would sound alarm on various violations of human rights.”
