Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has called for equal treatment of all detainees and prison inmates in Nigeria, insisting that they should be granted temporary release to bury deceased family members, just as has been done in high-profile cases.
Falana made the statement in a video from 1:56 shared on Sahara TV, where he argued that the justice system must uphold fairness and compassion, regardless of an individual’s status. His comments appear to reference situations where certain prominent figures, including Nasir El-Rufai, were reportedly allowed to attend family burials under court-approved conditions.
He maintained that such privileges should not be exclusive to influential individuals, stressing that ordinary inmates also deserve the same consideration when faced with personal loss.
According to him, “I have now suggested through this medium that all suspects in police custody and all inmates and convicts in prisons must be released to bury their dead ones if and whenever they lose them. And please, if you know any prison inmate who may lose his or her mother, let me know.
