Joe Okechukwu, a producer and popular actor leading efforts against the Osu caste system in Igboland, has shared a conversation he had with a medical doctor
Speaking in a video shared by NTA from 18:12, Okechukwu said he met a the doctor during the Osu abolition program in southeast and the doctor showed him a picture of his five daughters. He said the doctor told him that all his daughters were beautiful and had dated Igbo men at different times but none of them ended up marrying an Igbo person.
Okechukwu mentioned that the doctor told him that each time one of his daughters entered a serious relationship with an Igbo man, the man’s family would conduct a thorough investigation into the daughter’s background and when they discover that the daughters were labeled as Osu, the families would promptly terminate the relationship.
In Okechukwu’s words: “I went to meet one (Igbo) man during the abolition program and the man took me to his house. He showed me a picture he took with his wife and his 5 daughters. He is medical doctor. The man said to me, ‘Joe, look at all my beautiful daughters, none of them married an Igbo man’. He said all of them dated Igbo men but none of them ended up with an Igbo person”
