Lawyer Precious Omorege has criticized Senator Ireti Kingibe for her comments on the alleged sexual harassment case between Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and Senate President Godswill Akpabio. In an interview with Channels Television, Omorege stressed that Natasha had every right to report the case to the authorities instead of speaking to Ireti first.
“It’s a sexual harassment claim, and I feel the only reason why this lady [Ireti] would say that is because we don’t take sexual harassment seriously,” Omorege stated. She explained that many people don’t even realize their actions could be considered harassment. “She [Natasha] has every right to report straight to the authorities or sue. She cannot come and meet you; you’re not her mother. Even if you feel you’re older than her, you’re not her mom.”
Omorege pointed out that if Ireti’s own daughter were in a similar situation, she would expect her to report the case to the right authorities, not to the accused person.
Regarding the overall case, Omorege emphasized the need for a proper investigation. “We have to hear all sides of the story, but somebody has made an allegation, and there should be an investigation launched into it,” she said. She also criticized the Senate President’s wife for suing Natasha for defamation before an investigation was conducted.
“First, we should hear these allegations, let’s see the evidence. If it gets to court and there’s no strong basis, then you can sue for defamation,” she explained.
Omorege compared the situation to a robbery case. “A lot of people lie about being robbed, but that doesn’t mean the police won’t take a robbery claim seriously. They investigate first,” she added.
