In a recent interview from 11:26 on Channels Television, Kenneth Okonkwo, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, spoke about opposition unity, coalition politics, and the strategic direction of Nigeria’s opposition bloc ahead of the 2027 general elections.

During the interview, Okonkwo stated, “If the opposition cannot unite and act as one, they should go and endorse BAT.” He made the remark while emphasizing that a divided opposition would struggle to present any meaningful challenge to the ruling party in the upcoming presidential election.

Okonkwo explained that Nigeria’s political history has consistently shown that fragmentation within opposition ranks often leads to electoral defeat. According to him, when opposition parties contest separately without coordination, they unintentionally strengthen the position of the incumbent government by splitting votes across multiple candidates.

He further argued that unity among opposition figures is not merely a preference but a necessity if they hope to remain competitive in a political system dominated by strong incumbency advantages. The ADC chieftain maintained that only a well-structured coalition with a shared agenda can effectively challenge the current administration in 2027.

Okonkwo also highlighted ongoing efforts within the African Democratic Congress to build a broad-based coalition that accommodates different political actors from across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones. He said the intention is to create a platform where internal competition is allowed but ultimately resolved in favor of collective support for the party’s chosen candidate.

He stressed that the ADC’s approach to politics is rooted in internal democracy, where aspirants are free to contest party positions, but are expected to rally behind whoever emerges through a transparent process. According to him, such discipline is critical to maintaining stability and credibility within the opposition movement.

Okonkwo added that political actors who choose to operate outside a united opposition structure risk weakening the overall chances of defeating the ruling party. He insisted that personal ambition must be subordinated to national interest if meaningful political change is to be achieved….Read_More…
